Is it a good idea to use jokes to get the audience warmed up?

Jokes can be a disaster for your presentation if they fall flat.  They can also be risky if your audience finds the joke inappropriate or offensive.  Rather than risk starting on a sour note with a bad joke, consider lightness or a little humor.  Always test it out on a few people before including it in your presentation.
